Russian President Vladimir Putin has lauded Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “very reliable person” in an exclusive interview with India Today, conducted ahead of his upcoming visit to New Delhi. Putin remarked that “India got lucky” to have Modi at the helm, underscoring the trust and depth of the bilateral relationship between Moscow and New Delhi.
Stance on Global Conflicts and Trade
During the wide-ranging discussion, Putin outlined Russia’s positions on major geopolitical issues. On the Israel-Gaza conflict, he reiterated that the only viable solution is the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, dismissing notions of any new special plans for the region. Regarding Ukraine, he stated that Russia would only cease hostilities if Ukrainian forces withdraw from territories claimed by Russia.
The Russian President also addressed economic ties with India, revealing that he issued a “direct instruction” to his government to explore purchasing more goods from India to help balance trade. This move aims to strengthen economic interdependence and diversify bilateral relations beyond defense cooperation, Reuters reports.
Broader Strategic Vision
Putin’s remarks also highlighted his vision for a multipolar world. He questioned the relevance of the G7, instead emphasizing Russia’s engagement with forums such as BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. He defended India’s right to purchase Russian oil, arguing that if the United States can import Russian nuclear fuel, India should have similar privileges, challenging Western energy sanction narratives.
Reflecting on history, Putin warned against the “idea of grandeur” that can lead nations to make strategic errors, signaling a cautionary message about unilateral dominance in global affairs.
The interview reinforces the perception of a strong Moscow-New Delhi axis. Putin’s personal praise for Modi highlights a relationship that continues to shape geopolitics, forming a cornerstone of India’s foreign policy and contributing to global stability.
